Why Won't My Kitchen Clean Itself? A Saloon Show At Old Threshers, Vintage Cars and Other Super Exciting Pictures That Involve Bathrooms. Sigh.

9/17/2014

Hey, hey!
Could someone come over and do my dishes for me?

Picture

I know you think I'm kidding but I'm serious.
This next picture was taken just three days AFTER I had cleaned up the crap up from the top picture...yeesh...

Picture

What?

Picture
I have an inability to do dishes
and
put crap away.

 Always.
Like really really always.

It just all seems so....
so unnecessary to do all that cleanup just to get it all dirty again.

And frankly, quite boring, if you will.
. Not necessary. Boring.

If I were to actually do
things like

"wash the dishes"
and
"clean the kitchen"
(yaaaaawwwwnnnnn) ,
then how will I ever find time to:

Go to the Old Threshers Reunion...
where there were plenty of cool, old tractors....
Picture
Picture

...and where an almost 3-year-old Little Boy Blue was so happy to sit on a nice person's tractor...with the assistance of his daddy of course.
Picture

Now how awesome is this cute little
oldie John Deere??!!

Picture

We rode the trolley....
Picture

And of course we had to see the
Saloon Girls Show!!!

Little Boy Blue's momma, "Kindness", (our 30 year old daughter), has such fond childhood memories of seeing the Saloon Girls Show every year when she visited the
Old Thresher's Reunion with her Grandpa Madsen.
Well...of course Kindness insisted we NOT MISS the show!!

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture

...and the looks on Little Boy Blue and his dad's face during the show....priceless!!
Picture

It really was an awesome show!
There was a dancing cowboy on a piano who sang to
Ghost Riders In The Sky. Oh it was fun!!

Picture
See the cowboy over there, on top the piano?

During Ghost Riders, he stood on the piano and rode an old vintage kid's stick horse. So funny!!

Y
ou know that song...Ghost Riders In The Sky...

sung by a ton of different people, from Burl Ives to Johnny Cash.
Yippe Yi Yayyyyyyyyyy!!!!!
The song was written by Stan Jones in 1949.
It is considered to be one of the top western songs of all time.
Here's Marty Robbin's version....

Okay, so on the way out of the
Old Threshers Reunion,
we passed the vintage car barn....

Picture

Picture
Picture
Picture

An old Texaco truck!

Hey!
This next picture is not of a vintage vehicle...It is however, of a bottle of new wine I tried out and an avocado dip after returning home.

Picture

Okay, now we move to some pictures from our quick trip to
Cedarburg, Wisconsin
that same week....

So this is an Olds Cutlass 442, early 70s
that was parked on a street in downtown Cedarburg.

Tim drooled over this car....

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture

Okay,
now this is a former gas station,

converted into a cool lady's shoppe within the last year or two
in downtown Cedarburg.

I noticed there's always men in this shop
browsing though,

you can tell they're checking out how the old service station has changed up. The owners kept the original floor, ceiling, a lot of the industrial/mechanical elements.

Picture

B
ands were playing on every block
that weekend......

Picture

This is a little peek-a-boo down onto the wine floor of the Old Mill we visited as well....

Picture

Tim and I browsed and ate,
and browsed and ate during our quick time there.

While browsing, we noticed a  door was open from the sidewalk to a building. We peered up there, duh.

These steps were just too intriguing not to take all the way to the top...

Picture

So we trailed up the flight of stairs.....
The whole floor up there was massive windows, huge warehouse rooms, and small artist's studios.

We purchased this watercolor/acrylic.
The artist had JUST popped in and we caught her at the right time in her studio.

Picture

And this shapely piece of Christmas art just screamed at me through another artist's studio window. It yelled, "BUY ME!!!! YOU WILL REGRET NOT BUYING MEEEEE!!! YOU KNOW YOU WANT MEEEE!!! JUST BUY MEEEEE ALREADY!!!!""""""
Picture
Picture
So I did.

Picture
And it is displayed on the shelf housing my
very-contemporary,
not-at-all-old-skool
CD/cassette collection.

Shut up!
People still listen to CDs and cassettes!

Right?

Right???? *scratching head*

A
nyhoo, here's my cool vintage 7-up clock......
keeps perfect time, too.

Oh! See the tiny sliver of the bathroom to the right, over there....
Picture

Well, this bathroom has a vintage license plate dealer frame just sitting on the vanity there....it says Iowa City.
Picture

Tim's grandparent's license plate from their last car in Albuquerque is on the bathroom wall too...
as is another collected vintage dealer plate frame,
Bliss Motors Inc, Detroit.

Picture

In case
you were thinking that license plate frames are tacky things to display on a bathroom wall,
I will have you know,
I hung an elegant towel holder up next to them.

Picture

What?

Here's a closer look....
Picture
Doesn't this towel holder just ratchet up the elegantness of this room a notch or two? BTW, elegantness is a word, look it up. In the Pretend Word Dictionary.

I paid all of $5 for this "towel holder" in the farm hardware section at Menards!!

I KNOW!!
Cool, huh!!!!!
 Heeeeeeeeee.....
Picture

Let me share what else you're going to be jealous of....

Picture
A light!
I
n my new cheap-o-rama dryer that just
got delivered today!!!!

A LIGHT!!!!
That works!!

In! A! Dryer!
YAY!!!

This will surely help me in locating the laundered dollar bills and quarters
much, much easier!

Is it obvious that I've never had a light in a dryer?

Okay, back to the streets of Cedarburg was this Ranchero.
I wanted to take a picture of the interior but some people were looking at me suspiciously while I was peering in the windows, so I didn't.

Picture
Picture
Picture
Picture

That Ranchero was parked outside this cutie old building on main street.
Those colors!

Picture

Gosh, I was going to do a post about Southwest Stuffed Peppers
but because I am boring you out of your wits, I will just show you a picture of the meal Tim's sister served us the night before we left back to Iowa....

Picture
Beyond deliciousness!!! And those fresh green beans, steamed and topped with a dollop of butter and crispy turkey bacon, so summertime awesome!!
I want that exact same meal every single week, that's how awesome it was!
Definitely one of the top five meals I've ever had!

Okay, in closing, just a quick picture of the kitchen counters I JUST NOW took
at noontime today Wednesday.
Although the counters do NOT have five days of dishes on them
(YAY!!! MIRACLES DO HAPPEN!!!!), they do have the following which apparently I am adverse to dealing with:

Picture
1. Last night's crapola pizza boxes
2. $5.99 empty wine bottle
3. Coffee can that apparently is permanently parked in that spot.
4. Dirty napkins
5. Bag of cat treats
6. Old lemon
7. Flyswatter
8. Dirty plates and glasses
9. Empty pitcher

Do not think for a minute that Tim and I do not know how to whoop it up in this casa!!! No sireeee!!!!!!
It
is one party after another all up in here, every night!!!
We just try to hide it real good, don't want other people to feel bad, ya know.

:)   :)   :)    :)    :)   :)

Okay, gotta go. Got a dirty cat pan I gotta clean out.
I mean, gotta tidy up the house for the next big blow-out tonight!

:)
Hey, have a good Wednesday y'all and talk at ya soon!!!

In Theory

11/8/2012

In theory,
this Indian Tomato Chicken should have had more flavor, more taste, not been so bland.
Picture

Not the most photogenic food dish, but still...

Picture

The recipe starts out good enough
...look at those spices and simple ingredients.

Picture

How can you go wrong with onion, ginger and garlic?

Picture

And all those healthy spices....turmeric, cumin, cardamon, nutmeg...yum.

Picture

The onions sauteing in the pan with the fragrant spices...

Easy enough, now add the cubed chicken breast
and the tomatoes....
Picture

But alas, not much flavor....I don't know why. Maybe this is supposed to be a mellow dish.

Now Tim liked this and ate the whole thing over the course of two days.

It is very healthy. I just prefer more flavor.

Here's the link for this Indian Tomato Chicken though, in case you want to check it out though.

In theory,
Whole Chicken + Bacon = Now How Could This Have No Flavor????
Alex G's Roast Chicken with Bacon.
Picture

Whole Chicken  seasoned with salt and pepper...

Picture

Stuff it with lemon and thyme...

okay, sounds like a plan....

Picture
Wrap the sucker with bacon.

Well, why not?!!!

BRING!
IT!
ON!

Bake the chicken in the oven until temperature reaches 160 degrees, about an hour....

Picture

HEY!!!
Where'd all the bacon go???

Well, I know the flavor went down to the bottom of that pan.

Picture

So I mash the lemons, just as the directions say to,
to get that citrusy juice out.

I add the pan juice into the lemony juice, and I add the mustard in and let it all come to a boil for the sauce.
Picture

Yes, I do think this chicken will have sooooooo much more flavor with that sprig of thyme on top,
why do you ask?

Also, that dinner plate,
INSTEAD OF AN APPROPRIATE MEAT PLATTER,
should help make this chicken dish taste yummy too, yes?

Picture

No.
No flavor.
None.

Even with that citrusy pan juice.

Picture

Picture

And no.

Even paired with whole wheat fettuccine and marinara.

Just no.

No flavor.

I have since gone into therapy cuz the equation
Chicken + Bacon = True Love Forever is sometimes...

wrong.

Picture

Another example of Chicken + Bacon = Sometimes Makes Angie Cry Instead Of Go Mmmmmm........
Picture

Pioneer Woman's Ranch Style Chicken.

Picture

Now how can all this goodness not yield much flavor?

And I love the Pioneer Woman's recipes...they're usually spot on!

Picture

You start by pounding out the chicken.

Mix the mustard, honey, lemon juice, paprika and
cayenne pepper together....
Picture

Add the chicken to the marinade and refrigerate 1-3 hours.

Picture

Get Sylvia The Cast Iron Pan out.

You remember Sylvia from this post, yes?

Picture

Fry up the bacon.

Yes. Yes, I think I will.

Picture

Clean out the pan and brown that chicken up on both sides pretty good.

Looking tasty already!

Picture
So after putting the chicken in the oven for ten minutes and then bringing it back up to the stove, throw the cheese and bacon on top.

Picture

Plate one up for yerself....
take a bite and ask....

Picture
"How can all these yummy ingredients create a chicken breast with so little flavor?"

Flavorless

almost.

Makes no sense.
Maybe I did something wrong but I don't think so, it's a pretty simple recipe. Anyway, here's the link just in case you try it and get a different result.
If you do try it, pleeeeze let me know :)

In theory,
Picture

These
Jamie Deen Barbeque Baby Back Ribs should be finger lickin' awesome!!!

Picture

This recipe required lots of stuff, the usual, but that's okay.

A good barbeque rub and sauce is hard to beat and worth the extra ingredients and work.

The rub...lots of good stuff in there like paprika, dry mustard, chili powder, brown sugar and more....
Picture

And the barbecue sauce fixins should be good too....oil, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup, dijon mustard, apple cider vinegar and such...

Mix it up and let it simmer on the stove in a sauce pan for 30 minutes or so until it thickens.

Picture

Once the ribs are done grilling or baking, slather the thickened barbeque sauce all over the ribs and dig in and enjoy.

Picture

Now wait a minute! There's no big flavor other than the barbeque sauce.

Which is fine.

But it tastes like barbeque sauce you can get out of a bottle.

All that work for
nuttin' special.
Crap!

You know, folks will probably think this sauce is real good but with the amount of work and ingredients, the taste should be something a bit more special.
It was just average to me.
I was surprised cuz I like Jamie Deen's recipes typically.
Here's the link in case you want to take a gander at it.

Okay lastly, In theory,
Picture

Bill's Bourbon Chili

should have been a huge hit.

But it wasn't.
*insert frownie face*

Picture
Lots of good stuff though here....
see the ground turkey breast in the lower right corner?

I think that's where I made my mistake.

The recipe called for ground beef.

Anyway, I'll share all the pictures......

Picture

Seems easy enough....
so then you plate it up and look forward to that total yumminess Bourbon Chili..

Picture

But the flavoring just was not there, even though chili powder and chipotle chili pepper were in there.

So I crunched up tortilla chips thinking that would add flavor.

Picture

But it didn't.
Oh well.

YOU KNOW WHAT WAS GOOD THOUGH????

Picture
That sour cream on top with the lemon zest!

Picture

Seriously, this sour cream recipe was so refreshing and so easy!

Picture

Zest up the lemon peel and mince that mint and throw it all together.

Picture

See,

I even wrote on the legal pad,

it was so nice and refreshing.

Picture
Picture

So this recipe was worth it just to find out about this simple sour cream topping.

Well I do have more disasters to share, but I don't want to bore you too much...

I'll wait till the next edition of Cooking Misadventures to do that :)

Now I gotta get back to work and post this
2001 Pontiac Bonneville SLE
with 107K miles...metallic dark blue,
super excellent condition inside and out as always :).
Yee Haw, check it out on the Turnkey Auto Inventory page!

All right guys, that's all I got!
Have a good Thursday day and evening and we'll talk at ya soon!!!!
:)

Cars And Dinosaurs

12/11/2011

Tim works with a dinosaur every day.

NO, NOT ME! Sheez.

This dinosaur...

Picture
This is a vintage Sinclair gas sign that hangs in the Turnkey Auto shop.
I picked it up at auction years ago. It's huge and it's cool.

This the best picture I could take of the sign yesterday; a customer's vehicle was on the lift.
In order to get this picture, I had to perch myself
under the hood of the customer's truck. See?
I'm classy like that, what can I say?

I tried taking the picture from a better angle to no avail mostly because I am short and too lazy to get the ladder out though.
Picture
Short people are just screwed in life!

It is never beneficial to be 5'2".

Except I do make a lot of tall friends at the grocery store asking them to reach that one lone box of bagel chips waaaay in back that only a 5'10" person and taller person can reach.

But enough about me :)

This customer truck is in the shop for brake work I think.

Did you know Turnkey Auto does brake work?
Picture

Yup, it says so right on the building...

Brakes, Batteries

and Suspension.

Picture

Let's get a closer look.

Yup.

Brakes, Batteries and Suspension.

Picture

And you thought we just did sales, huh?

Picture
We do it all...sales and service.

Turnkey Auto is the largest volume mover of quality, affordable vehicles in Frytown Iowa :)

And we do this out of our World Headquarters

you know.

The Turnkey Auto service shop is located 1/2 mile west of Frytown but the car lot is located right in Frytown at this building...
Picture

CRAP
Q: Who forgot to take a picture of the car lot and building in Frytown yesterday?

A: Dinosaur Angie

ARRRRGHHH!!
I will take a picture later this morning after the frost is off the vehicles and will post it then.
Q: Who has crap for their dinosaur brains?
A: We all know the answer to that.

Picture

The Turnkey Auto car lot in Frytown has hot vehicles like this
2004 Pontiac Grand Prix GT2 with 115k miles.

Sizzlin' is what this GT2 is.

Picture

The interior and body are like new. The mechanics are super excellent.

In fact,

ALL of our vehicles are in super excellent condition!

Picture

Was listed a couple days ago and sold yesterday. $3585? Really? AND this Grand Am SE was in SUPER EXCELLENT CONDITION like all our vehicles.

I hope everyone has a good day today on Sunday!
I'll leave you with a picture of these cute sheep in the field by the shop. I think they were trying to tell me they like that hot looking, black 2-door Ram Air Grand Am GT but they weren't so sure they could all fit in it.

See ya next time :)!

Old School Lasagna And A 1971 Chevelle SS

8/4/2011

Ya got me! I got nothin' to post on a 1971 Chevelle SS.
Other than an image in my head with me at the wheel, rockin' out to old school AC/DC, Van Halen, and the Bee Gees (shut up about the Bee Gees!)

Do you KNOW how much a '71 Chevelle SS goes for??!!
A girl can dream.

I have an Old School Lasagna recipe though.
Come join me, pull up a stool, grab yourself a beverage, let's chat...
Picture
All the fixin's for this delicious, low key lasagna.
This lasagna is delicious but low key.
The flavors of the fresh tomatoes really pop.
You can pair this lasagna with bolognese sauce if you wish.
I usually just pair it with sauteed peppers as a side dish and a hunka big ol' whole wheat garlic bread.
Also, I use whole wheat lasagna noodles, but I imagine the regular semolina noodles are delicious too.

Old School Lasagna
Adapted from Alex Guamaschelli - Food Network

Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 medium yellow onion, peeled and chopped
4 cloves fresh garlic, peeled and chopped
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
4 sprigs fresh thyme
1 bay leaf, fresh or dried
4 pounds ripe or overripe red toamtoes, washed and chopped
3/4 cup lightly -packed fresh basil leaves, washed
8 quarts water
2 tablespoons kosher salt
1 pound lasagna sheets
1 pound shredded Mozzarella
1 pound shredded Parmesan

Directions
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

Tomato Sauce:
In a medium pot, heat the olive oil and add the onions and garlic.Season with salt and pepper, to taste. When it turns light brown, add the thyme, bay leaf and tomatoes. Simmer for 20 minutes, then taste for seasoning. Add more salt and pepper, if desired. Remove and discard the thyme and bay leaves. Stir in the basil leaves and shut off the heat to allow the sauce to "rest."
HEY! No comments on the man-hand!

Pasta: Bring the water to a boil over medium heat. Add the salt and the lasagna sheets Cook for 4 minutes, drain and rinse under cold water. The pasta should still be very firm to the touch. Separate the sheets carefully so they don't stick together.

Picture
Ahhh, I never tire of processing a car sale :)
Oh, oh, oh! Stop the presses!
Turn down the sauce!!!
A nice young couple who are getting married in a couple weeks are buying a Grand Prix GT and I process paperwork with them. Gosh, they were cuter than cute, real nice folks.

Okay, paperwork completed, now back to the cooking....
Assemble the lasagna:
Spoon a thin layer of the sauce in the bottom of the baking pan. Arrange a layer of pasta sheets over the sauce. Sprinkle some of the Mozzarella and Parmesan over the pasta and another thin layer of sauce. Repeat the layering process 2 more times. It is important there be remaining cheese and sauce for the top. When you finish, there should be 4 layers of pasta and 5 layers of filling.
Cover the dish tightly with aluminum foil and put it in the center of the oven. Bake for 45 minutes. Raise the temperature of the oven to 450 degrees F and remove the aluminum foil. Bake until the top browns slightly, about 10 to 15 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and let it cool for 15 minutes or so before serving.
Peppers were on sale, yay!!
I didn't have to sell a prized painting either to afford them.
I love it when I don't have to pay 10 gazillion dollars for one red pepper.
So as a side with this dish, I usually make sauteed peppers in olive oil with salt and pepper.
Easy, healthy and a nice complement to the lasagna.

Angie's Note: The finished lasagna actually looks better than the pictures show......and it truly is mellow and delicious!
