Best Homemade Barbeque Chicken Wings Done Cooked Two Different Ways And A Bean Medley

7/24/2012

I cooked these BARBEQUED WINGS from Taste Of Home Grill It magazine two different ways on two different nights...

The first night,
I BARBEQUED them in the oven here...
Picture

A week later, I made the same wings only I grilled them on the grill according to the directions...
Picture

Oven...
Picture

Oven...
Picture
Grill...
Picture

Grill...
Picture

OKAY! Tim preferred the grilled ones.
Me, you ask?  It's a toss-up, both tasted the same but the grilled ones had a crispier scowl on them.

Picture
So here's the fixins for these finger lickin' wings.
Whether you grill or bake them.

Okay, let's start by making the
barbeque sauce....
Picture

Chop up the onions and garlic..

Pour the ketchup into a mixing bowl, add the cider vinegar and the brown sugar...

Add the Worcestershire sauce, chili powder, cayenne, cumin and mix all together...

Picture

So throw your onions and garlic into a skillet and begin sauteeing.

Picture

Add the ketchup mixture in.

Picture
Simmer uncovered
8-10
minutes.

And the aroma begins!

Oh, might I mention I had a little helper with me this day...

Picture
Little Boy Blue was playing with his new bath toys that his cool, young, hip, NOT OLD in any way Grandma and Grandpa bought him.

Next, mix up the olive oil, salt and pepper, and cider vinegar. Add this mixture into a plastic bag with the wings.
Picture

And let sit...

Picture
IN THE MEANTIME,
let me introduce you to my new vintage spoon rest I picked up at a garage sale.
Lurve it!

You want it?  Too bad.
Finders Keepers Losers Weepers.

Okay, back to the wings....

On the left we have the baking of the wings...

Get the wings set up on the baking rack.

Bake for about 15 minutes.
Picture

So then brush with some of the yummy barbeque sauce...do this TWICE. Cook for an additional 15 minutes
Picture
On the right we have the
grilling of the wings...

Go throw the wings out on the grill.

Grill for about 15 minutes.
Picture

Now brush with some of the barbeque sauce. Do this TWICE. Cook for an additional 15 minutes.
Picture

See that's it!!!
Plate up these finger lickin' babies!
Picture
The OVEN BAKED WINGS at your service!!!

With a Bean medley dish that I will be sharing.

Picture
And the wings that were put on the grill.

With some sweet potato fries if you will.

Okay, either way you make the wings,
by baking or grilling,
the barbeque sauce is
Picture

THE STAR OF THE SHOW!!!

Picture
Picture
So this barbeques sauce is worth making!!!
I guess this sauce works well on chicken breasts too!

I asked Tim why he liked the sauce so much and he responded:
1. Tangy but not too tangy.
2. Delicious.
3. Was it smoky? Cause something was real good in it.
4. Didn't give me heartburn either time.

Okay, now let's talk a little bit about the Slow Cooker Bean Medley from the same
Taste of Home Grill It magazine.
Picture
Care for a side of bean medley?

Picture

...with your chicken wings?

This Bean Medley is tangy and tasty and such a nice compliment to the barbeque chicken!
Picture

The reviews on this recipe state that it makes a good dip-like appetizer when you plate it next to a basket of crackers too.

So let's start this tangy Bean Medley recipe that goes in the slow cooker. You literally just throw stuff in the slow cooker and leave it alone! How easy is that??

Picture

So here's the fixins for this Bean Medley...

Picture

Chop up yer celery, green and red pepper and onions.

And that's all the prep work.

That's it!

Now start throwing stuff in the slow cooker...
Picture

Start with the ketchup.

Hello ketchup!!

Picture

Add the chopped veggies...

And add the brown sugar and Italian dressing...

Now add the bay leafs, vinegar, ground mustard and salt and pepper...
Picture

Now drain the beans...tons of beans!

Warning! This recipe serves 12, it makes a lot!
You may want to cut this in half for smaller families!
Add the beans and corn into the crock pot.
Picture

See,
lookin' good so far!

Picture

Mix up all the ingredients,

put a lid on it and slow cook for 5-6 hours.

Picture

This bean medley is healthy and is actually better the next day!

Picture

After 5-6 hours,

Picture

scoop up a spoonful of
beans...

Picture
Okay,
hope ya'll liked these pictures and such of the barbequed wings and bean medley!

OH! Here's the recipes...

Okay kids, gotta go!
However, I would like to show you to my colorful, ceramic rooster hanging out in my barn first.
Picture

This sweet boy used to be in my kitchen.

Picture
But then my sister-in-law came over and spotted him this past weekend.

Pretty Rooster Boy will now be scratching in the dirt in Wisconsin. On his Auntie's counter top.

Crowing away.

Cock-a-doodle-doooo!

Okay, stay cool everybody!!! Have a good Tuesday!!!
Talk to ya soon!

Oh Crap, Not another Hot Dog Post!!! Hot Dogs a la Rose.

7/17/2012

Yes, wee ones, this IS another
Hot Dog Post.
Which should endlessly entertain my mother and mother-in-law who are both cra-zeeeeeee about hot dogs.

Doesn't this Hot Dogs a la Rose dish look wonderful though below?

Picture
Oh sorry! It did look wonderful until I ate it.
Once again, I was only going to take a picture because I am not a big hot dog person.

But then I ate it after I took the pictures.

I think I must be a hot dog person.
Picture

Okay,
here's what this India-inspired Hot Dog a la Rose dish looked like after just ONE bite.

It's sauteed, spicy hot dogs in a pita pocket!
Picture
Picture
And these are the fixins for Hot Dogs a la Rose.

Except I didn't have any garam marsala spice!
And my grocery store doesn't carry it.

So...what to do?
What to do?
What to do?
Well, I put on my thinking cap to aid me in in my
garam marsala spice predicament.

Picture
NO!!!! Crap. Wrong cap!!
I meant my THINKING cap.

Picture
Wrong again! That's my feathered cap!
Now THIS one is my thinking cap!

Picture
Um,
or not.

Let me look a little further...just a minute...

TA-DAA
Picture
BINGO!!! My thinking cap! YAY!
So anyway I put my thinking cap on and it occurred to me, maybe my store has one of those McCormick variety spice packs...you know, they're kind of newer and are located in the spice aisle...And guess what...

Picture

BINGO again...looky loo!!!
They did!

I flipped the package over and sure enough...

Picture
Garam Marsala!!!!!
YAY!

Yay Angie, it's your birthday.
Gonna partay.
Like it's my birthday. Even though it's not really.
 My birthday.

Picture

Yeah, so anyway, this dish calls for fresh grated ginger so get yer ginger out of the freezer and grate some up.

Here's the recipe....By the way, not sure if little kiddos will be thrilled with this recipe, it's pretty spicy. Adults will love it though.

Chop up the onions, tomatoes, cilantro, mince the garlic and ginger and shred the carrots.
Picture

But of course, chop up the hot dogs too.
Picture

Picture

Put the onions, carrots, ginger and garlic in an oiled pan and begin to saute.

Picture

Add the salt and pepper...

Picture

And of course add the spices in...the garam marsala, turmeric and paprika.

Continue with the diced tomatoes and the ketchup.
Ketchup.
Kills me. :)

Picture
Throw in the hot diggity  dogs.

Picture

Be sure to add water if the mixture looks too dry.

Picture

Cover and cook on medium-low for 15 minutes.

Enjoy the aroma, it makes the kitchen smell fabulous.

Take the lid off and look at this!!
Those spices are absolutely fantastic. I kept picking at the hot dogs and eating them. And I don't even like hot dogs much.
Picture

Picture

Okay, get your pita ready....

Picture

Fill up that whole wheat pita with this hot dog goodness.

Never thought I would ever use those words; hot dog goodness.

Spicy, tasty and different is what this
hot dog dish is.

Each bite is different, several layered flavors.
Even Tim kept picking out some pieces to eat.

Hey everyone, that's all I got!
Stay cool today!

Have a good Tuesday and we'll chat again soon and I swear it won't be about hot dogs :):):)!!

I Can't Believe I Made A Hot Dog Casserole ~ You Did Not Read That Wrong ~ Chili Cheese Hot Dog Casserole

7/16/2012

Chili Cheese Dog Casserole...
Say WHAT????!!
Picture
*President Franklin Roosevelt served King George VI of England hot dogs & beer during a White House visit in 1939.
*Mrs. Jimmy Carter served hot dogs at a White House picnic in 1977.
*Queen Elizabeth II served hot dogs at a royal banquet held for the American Bar Association.

Picture
Well, if hot dogs are good enough for those dignitaries,

then they're good enough for my mother-in-law's birthday meal.

My mother-in-law June LOVES hot dogs.
So in her honor I researched hot dog recipes and she got herself a
Chili Cheese Dog Casserole meal for her birthday.
Picture
Okay, that means an ACTUAL casserole.

 With hot dogs.
Uh huh.
Hot dogs.
I can't even believe I made a casserole with hot dogs.
Picture
And then actually ate it.  But it was goooodddd!!
It tasted just like a Chili Cheese Dog. Only better.
 Weird. I know.
Picture
So these are the fixins for the Chili Cheese Dog Casserole.

See that Hormel Chili With Beans can? I've never used that before.

But it worked wonders in this casserole.

Start by mixing the corbread mix with the milk and egg...

Picture

Spread the batter in the pan and sprinkle on some chopped jalapenos.

Picture

Cut up the
veggies and of course the hot dogs...

Throw the veggies in the pan and sautee...

Add the hot dogs and saute for 3-4 minutes until slightly browned.

Picture
Then add the can of Chili Beans.

Picture

Add brown sugar and chili powder and stir....

Picture
Add the cheese...

Now you're ready to pour the mixture over the cornmeal and spread it out...

Finally, dollop the cornmeal on top and spread it out....add the remaining cheese on top.

Bake for 28-32 minutes.
Picture
Pull the casserole out of the oven...

that cornmeal makes a nice crusty top...

Mmmmmm.

Picture

Plate up this high class, high brow casserole, fit for a queen!

Picture

I scooped a serving out of the casserole dish to take pictures... and I was going to scoop it back into the dish when I got done with the pictures....

Picture
But I ate it instead. All of it, the whole scoop.

I don't even like hot dogs that much. But this casserole had so many layered flavors, with that can of chili with beans and the sweet brown sugar and the onions and celery and cheese. Mmmm. It was awesome!

Hope you try this recipe out for some kiddos sometime or an adult who loves them some hot diggity dogs :)

In the meantime though, wouldn't it be awesome to get a hot dog at this place in Waterbury, CT.
Well, if you were in a time machine I mean.
Picture

Frankie's is still around but the storefront looks a lot different now.

You know, if I could go back in a
time machine, I would go back to our kitchen table from 1975.....
Picture
cerealbit.com
where's there's an UNOPENEND
box of
 Post
Super Sugar Crisp
cereal...

And I would grab the box, tear it open and wrangle my hand down through the whole entire cereal contents, until the tips of my fingers reach the bottom of the foil liner, where I
retrieve what is only rightfully mine...

HAHAHA....HAHAHAHAHA!!!
HAHAHAHA!!

The glow-in-the-dark monster head!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!
Picture
flickr.com
They're mine, all mine!!!!

Yeah, but since I don't have a time machine, I'll just make do with a-wishing'.
:):):)

Okay, that's about it for today!
Hope everyone has a good Monday!!
Talk at ya soon!
Stay cool;
Have a hot dog kind of day :)

Angie Just Can't Not Share her Craptastic Crap She Picked Up

7/8/2012

Picture
So I like craptastic vintage crap, right?
Although I'm fairly certain those baskets up there aren't vintage. But they are functional and I picked them all up for two bucks at an antique store.

I did mention what I like is

NOT high dollar,
high brow stuff, right???!!

Okay good.
Here we go then on a few things Stud Muffin (okay mostly "ME") and I have picked up on our recent road trips in the last month...

Picture
Hello plastic lady lamp. You probably still work but Ima put a candle in the socket and use you as a centerpiece for a table setting sometime.
$5 at a flea market. Steal!.

Picture
Can you say $1 at the flea market in Prairie du Chien..all because it has a tiny chip?

Look at that shape!! And those colors!

Will look great in the summer kitchen. This planter is 12" wide and 7" tall.

Picture

As you know, I am a sucka for drip glaze vintage pottery.

And this is orange drip glaze ...a bit harder to find! Love it!
One dolla!!!!
Dolladolladolladolladolla.
Can't stop saying that. Dolla.

Picture
Seriously, what the heck did I need a mint green drip glaze planter for?

Other than it was 50 cents.

*sigh* I am sick.

Call
1-800-hoarder
intervention please.

Picture

If all that wasn't girly enough, I think I actually paid $3 for this vintage set of potholders.

Function.
Function, function, functional.

Picture
And if you're ever in Elkader, IA, for Pete's sake,

stop at this three or four floor antique and gift mall. It's in an old turn-of-the-century hotel.

Oh my, it was awesome!! They have adorable handmade pillows from $9-18, among so many other things. So darn reasonable Ima tell you!

Picture

This
pillow
worked it's way to
the
entry.

Picture
And Tim picked up this awesome football program there from 1963 on the Iowa vs. Wisconsin football game.
Near mint condition.

Picture

Do college football players look bigger today that they did here in 1963 or is it my imagination?

Picture

And of course, it being 1963 and all, there were cigarette ads in the college football program.

Full page, color ads!

Say what the what??!!

Picture

But there was also ads for soda pop too.

As well as cars, like this one for the 1964 Buick Wildcat. The Wildcat was manufactured from 1964-1970.
Picture
Aaaand of course another cigarette ad....
Picture

Picture
Now my drip glaze obsession combined with my coffee addiction forced me to buy these mugs at a convenience store in Beloit Wisconsin that also sold big fireworks and and antiques, as most convenience stores do {??}.

Shhhh, don't tell anyone, but I paid $4 each for these.
I knowwww, you're saying "You couldn't PAY me to take those."

Tsk, tsk. Beauty is in the eye dot dot dot.

Oh! I do love me the tractor seats that are used as small sitting stools.
This is in great condition!!
Picture
Found this at a flea market. The crusty old dealer guy wanted twenty bucks, which is not a bad price at all, very reasonable in fact.

It's just that it's hard for me to part with $20 unless it involves a ribeye and baked potato.
Think he really needed to get rid of stuff though, cause he barked $10. Now how could I pass that up?

Picture
Hey, bought this cool full apron,
maybe not vintage though,

at an antique shop in Cedarburg, Wisconsin.

Thank goodness it has wrinkles, cuz then it matches my other aprons real well.

Picture

Tim bought this vintage kids thermometer booklet from 1954.

Picture

It actually has a lot of interesting information inside.

Picture
And he liked this Popular Science magazine from February of '63..."Detroit Goes Back To The Races."

Tim used to race hobby stock for several years and even won several features.  One year he won an award for being the nicest driver, the only year they handed it out.

I bought a book too.
I don't just buy old pottery pieces you know.
Picture
Hey man, dig this....Favorite Pop/Rock Lyrics from 1969.
This book has lyrics from Jimi Hendrix to the Monkees, The Doors to Donovan. Huh. Interesting. Far out, you could even say.

And lastly, I bought this vase for a couple bucks. It has a small chip. T'aint matter.  I think this pattern is called Banded Ring or something like that....Ring of Bandits, Bandit Without A Cause, oh heck, I don't know.
Picture
Well, that's about it for now.....hope you weren't too bored by my crapload collection of craptastic cheap-o-rama collected crap.
You'd be really bored though, if I showed you expensive  hoity-toity crap and shared how much I paid....Oh look, I only paid $400 for this vase that looks real similar to one I could have bought at Tuesday Morning for $12.
Yeah, thank goodness I'm not rich.

*sigh*
I didn't mean that. I wouldn't mind being rich.
:):):):):):):):)

Okay, have a good one guys! Talk at ya soon! :):)

Spaghetti Squash Parmesan and Herbed Quinoa

7/7/2012

Hiya!! Hey, did ya see the big moon the other night?!?!  It was so bright!
Picture

So what do you think of this
Spaghetti Squash Parmesan?
Picture
Colorful?  Yes'm.   Fresh?  Yes indeedy.
Healthy? Yes please.   Tasty?  Yes sir!

Picture

I served it with this Herbed Quinoa.

A super fresh alternative on a hot steamy July evening.
Picture

So let's start with the fixins for this Spaghetti Squash Parmesan.

Picture
So halve the squash and set in a pan with a little water, skin side up.
Bake 30-40 minutes. I baked mine about 25-30 minutes.

Chop up the green onions, tomatoes, garlic and parsley. Have all the ingredients ready by the stove.
Melt the butter in a skillet and cook green onions and garlic for 3 to 4 minutes. Oh this concoction smells heavenly!
Pour in broth, tomatoes, and add the Italian seasoning.
Picture

Take the squash out of the oven and set right side up.

Picture
String the squash with a fork.

So easy!

It actually starts smelling good right about now.

Picture

Pour the tomato mixture on the squash.

Picture

Salt and pepper these babies up real good!

Add fresh parmesan (yum!...it pays to buy fresh for this recipe!) on top.....
Picture
Picture

And finish with the parsley.

Picture

Okay, let's get started on this Herbed Quinoa.  Here's the fixins.

Okay, start the quinoa in the pan with the chicken stock and lemon juice.
Picture

Now for the quinoa dressing, chop up the herbs and zest the lemon.

This is where it just gets all darn easy. Just take the olive oil and add the herbs and season with salt and pepper.
Picture
See how easy that was!

Picture

Now mix the herbs into the quinoa.

I was so excited that this meal was coming together so quickly that I got a little memo-pad-and-sharpie happy.
Picture

Picture

What?

Picture

Dear Parents,

Your children HATE liver and onions and would rather have hamburgers.

You're welcome,
Angie

Picture
I'm conflicted.

Gorecki's
Third Symphony is haunting and beautiful and soul nourishing.

But so is AC/DC's Whole Lotta Rosie.

Go figure.

Picture

'Nuff said.

Anyhoo, getting back to the the Spaghetti Squash Parmesan....PLATE 'ER UP with the quinoa.
Picture

Such a nice, light, vegetarian meal.
Picture

Picture

And the quinoa is so fresh and lemony.

Here's the recipes....

Jennifer Aniston Needs To Loan Me Her Garden Staff

7/3/2012

So I finally got some flowers in da house.
I mean on da property.
Da property doesn't sound near as cool as da house though.
Picture
Picture

Technically though, this picture is taken at

"da barn".

Picture

The poor outside of the summer kitchen had some new color planted too.

Some pink petunias were planted in a broken down bushel basket. And the flower box sings red and purple now.
Picture

The flower cart planters were filled too.

Picture
OH!
Look at this cute donkey by the house.
He says, "Why is there a plant on my back instead of a child, jugs of water and  woven baskets of food?"

Know who else is cute????

Yittle tiny babee
Little Boy Blue!!
Who is decidedly not  yittle or tiny anymore, so I need to stop saying that.
Picture
Look at those toofies!!!

Picture
So anyway....

Little Boy Blue spent part of the weekend with us,

and he helped me cook up some Sweet Potato Shepherd's Pie.

Gotta get these kids started early in the kitchen, you know!

Picture

He was actually interested AND engaged in seeing how things were mixed up and put together.

I had a stool in front of him that I used like a counter.

Picture
I asked Little Boy Blue if he wanted some of the soft, cooked, schmushed up sweet potatoes and squash.

He seemed excited to have a bite off his blue spoon.

Picture
"Grandma, what the h - e - double-hockey sticks was THAT??? Seriously!! I want my mom and dad!"

Picture
Sweet baby boy quickly recovered though and was excited for me to continue cooking with him..

Back to the flowers now....I actually threw some flower pots in pots...and a pan!
Picture

The horse trough and a bench receive some Angie beautification.
Picture
HEY!
My vines are growing back up the summer kitchen. The whole wall was covered with vines for years....

Picture

They even grew into the summer kitchen and  swirled around the antique, er, junque pieces up there.

And then one year they died.

But they're back now! Yay!

Picture

So this plant...I placed on this metal 1960's plant stand outside the summer kitchen.

And then three hours later it fell over when a wisp of wind came up.

So then I anchored it with that cement piece down there.

Cause
I.
Am.
Classy.
Like.
That.

Yeah.

Picture
Well, these crocks by the house are safe from sauerkraut and pickles this year.

Thank goodness huh!!!

And lastly, I will show you my nemesis....
Picture
The garden hose!
Blech! Boo. Hiss.
I am not a gardener and I do not like to water plants.

I want to be rich like Jennifer Aniston, and have her...you know, intelligence, and HIRE a full time gardener for this bounty of plants I have shown you today.

In closing.....
Picture
Little Boy Blue asks that any camera, remote, or cell phone you have in your hand.....to be so kind and give it to him.

Why is it a kid can have the world at his fingertips but all he wants is the electronic stuff?!?! How does that work?!?!

Okay ya'll!!
Have a great fourth of July!!
Stay nice and cool and sing a bunch of patriotic songs at the top of your lungs will ya?
People LOVE that :):):)
Talk at ya soon!

Really, Could This Be Any More Of a Boring Post? Health Nut Brown Rice.

7/3/2012

HEALTH NUT BROWN RICE.
Picture
Oh stop being so excited!
This Health Nut Brown Rice isn't
THAT good.

Now you're just humoring me.

Picture
Here's the fixins for this healthy, side dish.

I say side dish because I ate this as a complete meal and got hungry a half hour later.

This is a super healthy, moist, tasty rice though. In fact, Ima make it tonight again. CRAP! I forgot the sunflower seeds again. DOY!

Anyhoo,
start by making the brown rice with chicken stock.

Picture
Shred up the zucchini, summer squash and carrots.

Chop up the garlic and onion.

Throw the veggies in the skillet and begin sauteeing....

Picture
Now is your rice all cooked?
Yeah?
Good.

Hold tight.
Don't get all antsy with the rice yet.

Add the sliced almonds into the sauteed veggies...
Picture
And the red pepper flakes...
Picture
Now this is where you would add in the sunflower seeds too. If you would have remembered to buy them.  If you had a brain. And weren't peri-menopausal. Shut up.
It's a valid excuse.

Picture

So sautee for a few minutes until the almonds are browned.

Picture
Okay.
I'm showing the rice in the pan AGAIN.
I have rice pan show off issues today. *sheez*
Anyway, add the chopped parsley in.

Picture
And this is what the rice in the pan looks like with the chopped parsley and I think I am doing my best to turn readers off with boring rice pictures where no one will ever tune into my blog again ever.

Besides the fact I can't cook without a recipe, and my pictures tend to be on the, ahem, amateurish side, I am now turning people off with excessive boring  dish pictures.
I blame peri-menopause. Shut up. It's a valid affliction.

Picture

So add the rice into the sauteed vegetables.

Oh look! The rice is FINALLY out of that  pan and being included into the sauteed veggies!

Picture

And
HALLELUJAH!!!!!!

All together now!

Oh Happy Day!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Picture

So when you go to serve this moist, healthy rice, do me a favor and put it in a serving bowl that is appropriate to the volume of rice.

I love that vintage floral napkin the bowl is displayed on though.

Picture

This rice recipe really is a great side dish with just about anything...chicken, fish, even beef.

Picture
In fact, I did pick up all the ingredients to make this again tonight.
Maybe with a roast chicken.

My stomach just growled when I typed that.

Why I always gotta be hungry?

Yup, you got it.

I blame peri-menopause.

Shut up! It's a

oh you know the drill!

Anyway, here's the recipe.
Very easy!
Health Nut Brown Rice
Adapted from food.com posted by PaulaG
Courtesy www.turnkeyqualitycars.com

Ingredients
1 cup long grain brown rice
        2 cups reduced-sodium chicken broth
1 cup carrots, shredded – about 2 medium carrots
        1 cup zucchini, shredded – I used ½ yellow and ½ green
        ½ cup onion, diced
        2 garlic cloves, chopped
        3 tablespoons sunflower seeds – I didn’t have so I didn’t use
        3 tablespoons sliced almonds
        1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes
        1 teaspoon olive oil
2 tablespoons fresh parsley, minced or 1 tablespoon dried parsley flakes
        Pepper

Directions
Add the rice to the broth, bring to a boil.
    Cook according to package directions.
Allow the rice to sit covered for 10 minutes.
When the rice is almost done, saute the carrot and zucchini in olive oil for 2 minutes.
Add sunflower kernels, almonds and pepper flakes.
Cook over medium-high heat until the almonds are browned.
Add rice and parsley and pepper; stir until heated.

Angie’s Note: I think walnuts would be a great alternative for the sliced almonds.

Okay, that's about it for today folks!
Stay cool and have fun!!!
