Week 6

Football Friday

Discussion

This is the time of the season we start to find out who's who,
what's what,
and does your team have what it takes!

Let's get started!

Big 10

IOWA
Silver Fox: Here comes week 6. Sorry I missed y'all last week. With the Hawkeyes having a bye week, we said bye-bye and went on a trip to celebrate the first birthday of one of our grandchildren. Back to football and thoughts on the game against U.of Louisiana-Monroe. Not a bad opponent for the Hawks before starting conference play. They were the biggest team size-wise I've seen at Kinnick since the Penn State team of about 7 or 8 years ago. Even our offensive linemen looked small compared to alot of their players. But, McNutt was dynamite like usual. Vanderburg is hopefully getting into a groove. Hate to say it, but the defense has a long way to go. I was happy to see so many of the non-starters getting considerable playing time. I was particularly impressed with a trio of freshmen---Safety Nico Law, corner Jordan Lomax, and RB Jordan Canzeri. Now for the game against Penn State; I just hope the defense plays better, or else it could be a tougher game than it should be. We need this win. Besides, I enjoy Paterno's frustration with his lack of success against Iowa. Talk at ya next week.

Black And Gold Girl: Finally, a conference game to show Iowa where they're really at in development!  Yes, Penn state has had their share of difficulties and are by no means on the top of the big ten pile, but they always bring their best to conference games and tend to be a team that Iowa has a tough time getting past.  My prediction is hawks by 3.

Turnkey Tim: Big game for the Hawkeyes this weekend.  I would not say this game at Penn State is a must win, but get past this one and we could be looking at 7-1 going into October. This game will be a good test for our Hawks as Penn State should be the toughest defense that we have faced so far this year. The offense is going to have to score points as the defense is still looking to improve. The Penn State offense runs a more traditional scheme offensively relying more on the run so look for them to take the ball right up the guy, challenging the Hawks to stop them. Playing at Penn State with the home crowd will be a challenge for us. Are the Hawks the team that lost to Iowa State and trailed Pitt for three quarters or are we the team that has played well the last five quarters of football? We will find out on Saturday at 2:30. Iowa 27  Penn State 24. Go Hawks!!

MINNESOTA
Ace: Well I doubt that Minnesota and  Purdue is a big game on anybody's radar.  Neither team is really any good and you might see as many as 5 quarterbacks playing on Saturday.  Coach Jerry Kill has asked for faith and a never quit attitude from his players and fans.  Might as well ask for divine intervention while he's at it.  Hopefully the Gophs will look respectable but with a beat up squad and playing as many as 9 freshmen at a time on defense that is highly unlikely.  But patience may well be rewarded if Kill and his staff  are given time to turn this program around.  He's been succesful at all levels.  But as Bob Marley said "Only time will Tell!"

OHIO STATE
Buck-I:

MICHIGAN
A'maize'n Blue:

NEBRASKA
BO BIG RED: Well we SUCKED last week against Wisconsin, not because we are that bad,but because we got away from our game. We are a run up the gut,hard-nose hitting, and RUNNING football team.Last week they were supposed to wear their Black Jersey's Glad they didn't it was embarrassing enough, maybe that why Martinez kept throwing to the other team all night, he thought it was his team!! When he came out throwing 5 for 7 right away, and good passes,i was impressed, but knew since he is a 50% passer,he would get to the ground game, usually if we are close at halftime we turn on the burners, and blow them away with are well  conditioned 2nd half team. Then he came out passing or should say throwing interception after interception all leading to scores!!!! haven't slept all week, and Bo knows he can't throw, but he can run like a deer, which is what you will see this week against Bo's Alma Mater,Ohio State.great news after a loss like that BEATING we took ,I pity the team that's next, and their Quarterback throws as bad as Martinez,"YEAH" Ohio State is not THE OHIO STATE you hear the Pros, in the NFL proudly announce where the went to college, they still have 3 starters, out from taking money from BOOSTERS. But they are playing at 20yr sold out MEMORIAL STADIUM in NEBRASKA.No one comes into our house and wins,no one!!!Nebraska will bounce back, and Martinez will keep on the ground, and if he does that, and maybe throws one pass a half, look for BO and his boy's beat his old Alma Mater by 3 TOUCHDOWNS,so i can get some sleep !!!!!!! Shake Off Last Game Boy's The Rose Bowl Is Still In Play!!! SEE YA THERE!!!!   BO BIG RED

PENN STATE
Wakow: Penn State still hasn't decided on a quarterback and it will be to
their detriment as they play Hawkeyes. Look for a close game with the
edge going to, I'm sad to say, the Hawkeyes. There is always hope (We
Are).

WISCONSIN
Wisconsin Steve:Bye week this week in the State of Wisconsin.    Badger QB on the short list for the Heisman.  I can say that the Brewers just won their game and the Brewers start the NSLC on Sunday.  First series win in 29 years.  I can further say that the Brewers are 1 series away from the World Series.....love the Badgers but right now Wisconsin Steve is a very happy man.  I will predict that our Badgers might have a very similar happy outcome but we all know that!  I want to remind everybody that the Packers are playing Sunday night and we are predicting a big time win.   Hey brother Tim.....I'm getting a good feeling! .AOLWebSuite .AOLPicturesFullSizeLink { height: 1px; width: 1px; overflow: hidden; }.AOLWebSuite a { color: blue; text-decoration: underline; cursor: pointer; }.AOLWebSuite a.hsSig { cursor: default; }

Bill's Big 10 Corner
Bill:Minnesota at Purdue : Minnesota has been disappointing, Purdue wins
Illinois at Indiana: Illinois moves to 6-0
Iowa at Penn St: Iowa seems to have Penn State's number and pulls an upset here!!!
Michigan at Northwestern: Persa out again so Michigan wins and moves to 6-0
Ohio St at Nebraska: Ohio St is down this year, Nebraska wins at home
On tap for next week ............Michigan at Michigan State

Big 12

Texas
Bevo jr: . – OK it’s here - now what do we do? The Red River Rivalry! It’s huge!

These Okie boys look big, tough, and they are experienced under fire… attributes that we freshman heavy Longhorns are not as abundantly blessed with as Oklahoma. What can we do?

Our young ‘Horns are going to try to show them nasty Sooners some things they’re not expecting- maybe some things they haven’t seen before. Their QB Landry Jones is getting some Heisman consideration; our QB’s pictures are still on Gerbers baby food bottles. So look for an assortment of what some call gimmicks, gadgets, and smoke & mirror “trickplays” to help level the playing field, courtesy of OC Brian Harsin. But don’t call it “trickeration”! At Texas this year, we call it “our play book”. We’ll try reverses, double reverses, wildcat snaps to 3 or 4 different backs, and any assortment of Harsin disguises necessary to hang with the #3 ranked Sooners. Because we know that Bob Stoops will keep the pedal-to-the-metal in order to make this a ‘statement game’ and get back to #1 in the polls. This game is B-I-G. You will be looking @ long gainers thru the air by both teams, and pound-pound-pound on the ground by OU.

For the Longhorns to have a chance, we need our “Fun-eration” to work at least as good as Brian Fontana’s Sex Panther cologne in ‘Ron Burgundy Anchorman’ – 60% of the time, it works every time. (it’s made with bits of real panther you know). Will it be enough?

Prediction – if Okla wins it could be 48-24; for UT to win it could be 35-34.

This is an old fashioned RED RIVER SHOOTOUT as it always has been. Who will win? Stay tuned.

Now let’s go see if we can make this little kitty purr.

Hook ‘Em Horns!

Oklahoma State
Boone's Boy:

Texas A&M
Hullabaloo:Wow.   It happened again.  How did the Aggies respond to the 17 point meltdown vs. OSU?  By one-upping that with an 18 point meltdown vs. the new rival Arkansas Razorbacks.  We absolutely manhandled them in the first half to a 35-17 lead and then didn’t come out of the locker room.   The players were tight and the coaches were scared.   You could feel this sense of dread during the 2nd half and the team made zero impact plays and the pass defense was completely shredded.  It was like a nightmare you couldn’t wake up from that ended Razorbacks 42 – Aggies 38.  Gotta buck up though because now the season is REALLY on the line and we’re headed to Texas Tech which has been a house of horrors.  A&M only has one victory up there since 1993.  This game marks the end of a pretty intense rivalry so I expect both teams to go all out.  Is the Aggie offense going to finish the game and execute in the 2nd half?  Will the pass defense (worst in the country) finally make some plays and not let Tech QB Seth Doege embarrass them?   I say yes and yes.  Mike Sherman knows he got to get this thing turned around now to avoid the hot seat so I expect much more aggressive play calling and a personnel change or two on defense for a spark.  Aggies 38 – Red Raiders 31.  Farmers Fight!

Pac-12

Colorado
Buffalo Up:

Utah
Red 5 Standing By:The Utah Utes suffered a disappointing loss to the Washington Huskies last week, and look to get back into the Pac 12 South race by beating a very strong Arizona State squad in Salt Lake City.  ASU has had no trouble putting up points so far, and a big factor in Utah’s loss to Washington was its offensive ineptitude after starting QB Jordan Wynn was lost to a shoulder injury late in the first half.  His backup will lead the Utes this week against ASU, but if last week is any indication Utah is going to have a hard time scoring points.  Given how strong ASU has looked so far this year, this week’s game will be an uphill battle for the Utes.

Now on to week 7. But first, I guess I'll comment on the Penn State game. I didn't recognize the Iowa team, because that wasn't Hawkeye football. The fan that I am, I don't like to be so critical. However, that was disgusting for the most part. My worst: fears were confirmed with our defense. The game wasn't as close as what the final score would lead one to believe. Kudos to Micah Hyde for his play, tho. As for the offense; as always, Marvin McNutt was very good. It's a shame he's not getting more plays designed for him. Vandenburg had a less than desirable game. I'm not sure he's our guy at quarterback. But, I can't fault him for effort. He does play hard; even when things aren't going well. I like that in a player. The guy I was most impressed with was Marcus Coker. I enjoyed watching his second and third efforts carrying the ball and bowling defenders over. Way to go!!! The body language with the rest of the team was showing little to no enthusiasm. We better come out with fire on Saturday night against Northwestern, or else it's going to be another loss. If that happens, then make no Bowl Game plans my fellow Hawk fans. But, I'll be there like always. No matter what, I don't quit on the Hawks. I know there'll be better days-just hoping they will take place this year yet. I know this team is better than what they showed last week. GO HAWKS!!!
