I Can't Believe I Made A Hot Dog Casserole ~ You Did Not Read That Wrong ~ Chili Cheese Hot Dog Casserole

7/16/2012

Chili Cheese Dog Casserole...
Say WHAT????!!
Picture
*President Franklin Roosevelt served King George VI of England hot dogs & beer during a White House visit in 1939.
*Mrs. Jimmy Carter served hot dogs at a White House picnic in 1977.
*Queen Elizabeth II served hot dogs at a royal banquet held for the American Bar Association.

Well, if hot dogs are good enough for those dignitaries,

then they're good enough for my mother-in-law's birthday meal.

My mother-in-law June LOVES hot dogs.
So in her honor I researched hot dog recipes and she got herself a
Chili Cheese Dog Casserole meal for her birthday.
Picture
Okay, that means an ACTUAL casserole.

 With hot dogs.
Uh huh.
Hot dogs.
I can't even believe I made a casserole with hot dogs.
Picture
And then actually ate it.  But it was goooodddd!!
It tasted just like a Chili Cheese Dog. Only better.
 Weird. I know.

So these are the fixins for the Chili Cheese Dog Casserole.

See that Hormel Chili With Beans can? I've never used that before.

But it worked wonders in this casserole.

Start by mixing the corbread mix with the milk and egg...

Picture

Spread the batter in the pan and sprinkle on some chopped jalapenos.

Cut up the
veggies and of course the hot dogs...

Throw the veggies in the pan and sautee...

Add the hot dogs and saute for 3-4 minutes until slightly browned.

Then add the can of Chili Beans.

Add brown sugar and chili powder and stir....

Add the cheese...

Now you're ready to pour the mixture over the cornmeal and spread it out...

Finally, dollop the cornmeal on top and spread it out....add the remaining cheese on top.

Bake for 28-32 minutes.
Picture
Pull the casserole out of the oven...

that cornmeal makes a nice crusty top...

Mmmmmm.

Plate up this high class, high brow casserole, fit for a queen!

I scooped a serving out of the casserole dish to take pictures... and I was going to scoop it back into the dish when I got done with the pictures....

Picture
But I ate it instead. All of it, the whole scoop.

I don't even like hot dogs that much. But this casserole had so many layered flavors, with that can of chili with beans and the sweet brown sugar and the onions and celery and cheese. Mmmm. It was awesome!

Hope you try this recipe out for some kiddos sometime or an adult who loves them some hot diggity dogs :)

In the meantime though, wouldn't it be awesome to get a hot dog at this place in Waterbury, CT.
Well, if you were in a time machine I mean.

Frankie's is still around but the storefront looks a lot different now.

You know, if I could go back in a
time machine, I would go back to our kitchen table from 1975.....

where's there's an UNOPENEND
box of
 Post
Super Sugar Crisp
cereal...

And I would grab the box, tear it open and wrangle my hand down through the whole entire cereal contents, until the tips of my fingers reach the bottom of the foil liner, where I
retrieve what is only rightfully mine...

HAHAHA....HAHAHAHAHA!!!
HAHAHAHA!!

The glow-in-the-dark monster head!!!!
HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

They're mine, all mine!!!!

Yeah, but since I don't have a time machine, I'll just make do with a-wishing'.
:):):)

Okay, that's about it for today!
Hope everyone has a good Monday!!
Talk at ya soon!
Stay cool;
Have a hot dog kind of day :)
